Upon re-reading my half-dozen books of essays produced over thirty years, the books in aggregation seem to have a more coherent narrative thread than any one of them has as a stand-alone volume. They add up. Essays written decades ago seem as relevant today, and in some cases have the vivacity of someone just in the process of discovering a writing voice. Their unity lies in the steady acquisition of experiences, layered upon the same foundation, and the slow evolution of a set of ideas against the background of the constant struggle to produce a body of architectural works. Perhaps one day I will persuade a publisher to combine these books as a single grand volume, but until then, you, dear website visitor, are invited to assemble these pieces of puzzle. Click on chapter titles to read excerpts, and read with pleasure.
